No Reluctance Leaving Behind Past Glories of her Heydays
Interviewing Maggie Shiu is a challenge with her limited fluency in Mandarin. However, since her entrance to showbiz for over 20 years, from being the “Fa Dan” to the veteran status of TVB, it is probably her no frills personality that enabled her to stay strong in the entertainment industry.
Across two decades, she has always been part of major TVB productions produced for anniversary celebrations such as “Threshold of an Era” (2000) to “Gem of Life” (2008).
Like her peers, Maggie Shiu has witnessed the most glorious era of TVB in the 80s and 90s, since joining TVB at the tender age of 19 with fellow artiste Sheren Tang, Kitty Lai, Aaron Kwok etc. Sheren Tang is widely known as her best friend in TVB.
Her first assignment in showbiz was playing the female lead in Jacky Cheung’s “Gently Touch Your Face” Music Video, in which she only need to arch her face for Jacky to touch. For her first few TVB dramas, she paired with Andy Lau and Tony Leung. When filming “Take Care Your Highness” with Andy Lau and Carina, she was almost injured by Andy Lau. It was a blessing in disguise though.
Andy Lau Gave Me a Protection Jade
Maggie explained, “I wanted to take a closer look while standing behind so I moved nearer but Andy was not aware and turned around and punched me accidentally on the face. At that time, the blow almost caused me to faint. He felt sorry for my misfortune and gave me a piece of jade, which I found out later that was his “protection jade”.
On rumors that Andy Lau was secretly carrying a torch for her then, Maggie exclaimed, “Really, it should be me having a crush on him! He is really nice and caring. We were acting as lovers in the drama and the media probably took reel for real life and complicated matters. I am a simple person so I can’t help it if people think of us in more complex terms.”
For the three record breaking TVB drama productions of the 80s to 90s, “Blood of Good and Evil”, “And Yet We Live” and “The Breaking Point”, Maggie Shiu finally established herself as an iconic and charismatic actress with a strong personality, distinctively identified by her classic short hairstyle which stays unchanged over the years.
Maggie shared on her passion for acting, “Nowadays I find filming fun and happy. In the past I can film for weeks without sleeping and now once I start work I don’t stop but I am not tired. During my younger days, I did not know how to cherish myself and was a workaholic, but now I know how to take time off to rest. Because I see acting as an enjoyable and pleasurable affair, I grew to like my job more and more.”
As the conversation develops, we come to realize that its not that Maggie is unwilling to share but she really has no idea how to respond. Maggie does not feel that TVB has complicated relationships and she is not worried whether she will be famous or not. She explained, “I have a detached disposition from this competitive world and I am completely at ease in whatever circumstances I am in. If I look at the world from a simple point of view, I am just a simple veteran, if I adopt the complex view, then I will find the world complex. If I am not popular, worrying is of no use. I might as well use the time spent worrying to do more things.”
Will not follow Gigi and marry into a rich family
In “Gem of Life”, her onscreen sister Gigi Lai finally married into a well-off family in real life. But Maggie Shiu is like her renegade character in Gem of Life Sylvia Hong who goes against her mother’s wish for her to marry the rich and famous. At the Gem of Life press conference in Taiwan, she announced she will not marry into the upper class but during the interview backstage, she clarified, “Its not that I don’t want to but I have never thought about this issue. If I meet someone ideal, I won’t rule out the idea. You will not bother if the person is rich or not when in love.”
Learning Beauty Therapy to Stay Healthy
Years ago, Maggie’s health deteriorated due to her hectic filming schedule. She suffered from liver, kidney and lung problems and her weight dropped to 82 pounds. The hospital became her daily haunt. Even with this bout of ill health, Maggie remains unfazed and she did not feel that life is full of pain and sorrow.
“Poor health is not a dead end. You just have to deal with it and see a doctor when unwell. In life there will always be bad times. I don’t think being sick is unbearable and once that episode is over, you won’t remember. “
Recently, there was a rumor that she has gained weight as a result of hormonal imbalance. The 44 year old responded with a laugh, “I am very healthy now and for years, I have been learning beauty therapy and practicing traditional Chinese medicine to take care of my health. If there is anything beneficial for my health, I will learn it and I believe beauty and health has a symbiotic relationship. Taking care of my personal well-being is for the future.”
For both career and love, Maggie is not competitive. However, she added, “Once I love a person, I will cherish him dearly.”
Recalling the years of bad health, worsened by other unhappy events, does she feel that those were most trial some times of her life? Maggie replied nonchalantly, “I don’t remember. I don’t like to look at the past as I prefer looking forward and see the future.”
Since she always has a role in Jonathan Chik’s mega dramas, is she grateful to him?
Maggie replied, “I am definitely grateful to him. And also to myself because I put in hard work too. I am not sure about success each time but I believe hard work pays off eventually.”
