MAGGIE SHIU : I CAN'T SPEAK WELL

MaggieShiu has remarkable acting skills. From an innocent girl to a mature doctor, her experiencestretches over 20 years. This time, she portrays the role in "Election"with a rather special flavour.

However, Maggie is one who is seldom in the entertainment news. She has been living a simple life.The only ways one can know more about her will be interviews or some old news which she faces very easily.

As for this interview which she accepts for her new movie, her face is a visible blank, "I can'tspeak well, so please help me fill up the space."

Maggie has been an actor with this director (Johnny To) since '97 to '99. She has even forgotten when she signed contract with him but his company is a place where Maggie is familiar. All her movie awards are placed here and she  is close even to the auntie serving drinks. However, once she is back on the interview,she seems rather frustrated and worse, when facing the camera, sheadded, "Taking photos is my biggest stress."

Back to the movie, Maggie has been doing well in movies, winning Best Supporting Actress at least twice and portraying rather manly roles. In Election, she is the only female cast, but she is no longer like a guy,but the big sister, a lady who dresses up a lot.

"This is the first time I'm attempting this kind of role and the biggest challenge for me was...that pair of high heels, the skirt and jewellery. The feminity is worse than when I was acting in "TheThreshold of Era" as I don't dress up like this usually." Pointing toher casual shoe wear, she says she likes tobe simple and at ease. Then,as the photographer requests for a full-body photo, she takes off her slippers.

Other than the shoewear,Maggie continues to explain, "My character. She's very bold, someonewho speaks very in a firm way, someone who's gone through a lot.She issomeone who trusts and listen to her husband a lot, and tries her best to help and support him. As long as he likes it, she will be besidehim, not considering herself at all."

"It may not be my first time acting a very tough character, but this role really requires me to concentrate and forget all about myself. I have to forgo even the little things I do, like moving my hands about while talking, or moving backwards suddenly while talking. These are my "small actions" I have to remove." The reporter has heard that she was even ina fight scene. Maggie explains, "I was beaten, nearly beaten to death that sort, andit's all real, especially since I have an old injury, I sprained my hip."

In this show,Tony Leung isher husband. "We do not have many scenes together, but our speeches arevery touching, and will make people feel really comfortable. This is how a couple's realationship can be so deep."

"We specially arrange certain things for each character, but we don't say them out but just use our feelings. For example, I will be thinking,this couple met each other on a roof so I will... Go and watch the movie! It's this kind of feeling that is so hard to express!"

Tony and Maggie acted once previously in Black Rose in '92 but has not acted together till now. Under this director, she has paired up with Simon Yam many times. When asked to describe both of them, she was in much difficulty to answer, "Simon is good, Tony is also good! (Maggie herself can't resist laughing) Both are serious, and don't waste any time."

As for with the director, Maggie states, "When he has a suitable role, he will find me although it's not every movie he make. In a manly show, a female role is also required but he will not just ask me in. I trust him a lot and he knows how I will act it out differently each time. For this movie, he requested for me not be too complicated and just keep things simple."

Since the 80s, Maggie has been on our TV till now. The audience like her just like how she likes all the roles she plays. However, the audience did not accept her playing the mother of Sonija, Charmaine and Ron in several TVB dramas.

"This is something I have toaccept, not that I mind. It is a rather difficult type of role and aslong as I act it well, I don't mind at all. It's a different stage... Iwould prefer shooting about the past (in ancient drama), as the people then had children when they were less than 20 years old."

Maggie is very open about this, "Everything's fine as long as there's acting to be done."

Is it because Maggie had to stay home a few years back when she was ill and therefore she is appreciating even these roles? "I'm not saying about that time, but the fact that there are many jobless people out there, so I should just act happily as the days go by."

Asfor Maggie's recent sexy advertisements, many people were not used to it. "That is another role, a very fit, perfect lady. (The reporters were all very shocked too!) Well, I'm an actor. I will give my best to what people call for.They don't have to persuade me. They just know I can sothey call me. I think I can, and most importantly is the surprise I give topeople."

Maggie pointed out that  after the ads, she did not mind acting a crazy, joking or squarish sort of role, but nobody asked, so she would just like to beherself.

Intro Twenty years pass very quickly; do you remember that when Maggie Siu Mei Kei first entered the entertainment industry, many people considered her to be "Little Yan Lei?" Do you remember Maggie from "Heavenly Dragon Sword Sabre?" In the past, Maggie did not place too much emphasison victories. When she was dating Chik Kei Yi, Maggie thought about leaving the entertainment circle after getting married. After she broke up with Ekin Cheng Yi Kin after a 8 year relationship, Maggie had to heal her wounds. When Maggie was in school, she would wear shorts underneath her school uniform. This year, Maggie successfully reinvented herself by filming slimming ads. Her popularity rose dramatically...people do change over time. Some celebrities never thought about an acting dream. When Maggie's exam grades didn't allow her to pursue university, she became a nurse at a family doctor's clinic. Maggie said, "I have given needle shots to patients!" In the daytime, she was Nurse Siu, but at night, she took classes in business administration. One year passed, Maggie become more and more unhappy. Maggie's parents were worried but no matter what they said, it didn't help and rather irritated Maggie more. Her parents didn't want to place too much pressure on her, so they left her alone. An opportunity for Maggie came when one of her friends from overseas came back to Hong Kong for vacation. Her friends gathered a group of people to apply for TVB's acting classes. Shortly after, Maggie received her notice to enter the class.... Maggie was in the 2nd year TVB acting class. It was a 4 month program and fellow classmates were Sheren Tang Shui Man, Kitty Lai Mei Han, and Nathan Chan Ting Wai. Among all of them, Sheren was the luckiest, as shortly after graduation, she played lead roles.

Falling for Basketball Player in School

Because of the training class, Maggie met Chik Kei Yi, who was a scriptwriter/director at the time. Chik was helping teach the class. In 1986, a reporter saw them on the street holding hands. Maggie said they were only friends at the time and even talked about her first love, "I am still impacted by my first failed relationship."

Maggie's first love happened when she was in high school, in Form 3. He was 3 grades above her. Both of them played on the school's basketball team. Maggie said, "At the time, my worst subject was physics. I could never pass the tests, so one day he helped me studied for the exam. I did very well on the test, so I was very grateful to him. After he graduated, we didn't keep in tough. When I was in Form 5, he told me he had to go to Canada to get married. His wife was also his schoolmate. I cried and was heart-broken at the time."

Maggie Said That Her Heart Won't Change

In January 1987, Ming Pao asked Maggie, "What do you like most about Chik Kei Yi?" Maggie said, "His intelligence. When we were in the training class, everyone thought he was mean. But after I got to know him better, I found that he is very kind-hearted. But our relationship has ended." At the time, did they really break up or did Maggie not want to reveal that they were still dating? Because the story doesn't unfold the same way....

In November 1988, there were rumors that Maggie was dating Siu Chung Hung. Maggie said, "I am only learning design from him. My boyfriend trusts me, but I don't want him to be unhappy." But the rumors didn't stop; reports said that Siu Chung Hung obviously had feelings for Maggie. So Maggie said, "My relationship with Chik Kei Yi has not changed. Our relationship is only growing stronger. Although it's hard to say that love is always forever, I can swear that at this time 'my heart will not change."

Earning Money to Emigrate In July 1989, Maggie had an interview with Ming Pao. Maggie said, "I need to save $3 million (HK dollars) as I would like to move overseas. After the Tianmen incident, I considered the HK handover back to China more closely."

Having dated Chik Kei Yi for 5 years, did Maggie want to get married first then move overseas? "I don't think so; we both have good careers now, so we are not thinking about marriage. Not long ago, a fortune teller told me that marriage at a later age is more appropriate for me. The best is 4 or 5 years later. And he never mentioned marriage." Maggie's tone was very calm. "We have been dating for so many years. We know each other very well and we have confience in each other. No matter what happens, we will be together. He is afraid that I don't have enough soups to drink. He usually follows a recipe carefully and would make soups for me. Even when making a soup, he wants it to be perfect. His artistic skills are great. He is really my idol."

However, in December 1991, Maggie admitted that she had already broken up with Chik. "The reason was that we were both too busy. In the last year, both of us tried very hard to save the relationship, but we were unable to do so. One month ago, I had a surge urge to get married, however the thought went away quickly."

When the official news broke, 3 days later, someone saw Maggie with Ekin Cheng together. They seemed very close, but Ekin said, "We were just attending Cheng Chung Kei's birthday party with other friends." Will there be a chance that you will have a relationship with Maggie? "Probably not." But not long afterwards, Maggie and Ekin admitted their relationship. It wasn't until 8 years later that Ekin and Gigi Leung Wing Kei fell for each other and broke off his relationship with Maggie. Epilogue- Pretending To Run Away From Home Maggie is an only child and has experienced loneliness in her childhood. Wanting to gain her parents' attention, she has pretended to run away. She wrote her parents a slip saying "I have left home. Please don't look for me." She hoped that her parents would be shocked and look for her. But nothing happened, perhaps they didn't find the slip or they realized that Maggie was only playing a trick. Maggie was disappointed when her parents didn't show any reaction.

In high school, Maggie was an important member of the basketball team. Maggie said, "But I was fat then at 140 lbs. I only started to lose weight during exam period. My weight dropped to 100 lbs. I was pressured by the exams, but at the same time I had wanted to lose some weight. Each day, I only ate an orange or apple." And also because of lost love....

"Afterwards I realized I was too skinny. Gaining back weight was very easy, every night I would drink milk. Eat regular meals and I snacked a lot on chocolate. Two months later, I gained 20 lbs. But I balanced the weight gain with exercise. At the time, I was living in Tsam Tsui Po and would go jogging everday in the morning."

Maggie Shiu and Wong Hei Filming "CIB Investigation Files"

Earlier, Maggie Siu Mei Kei and Wong He were filming an outdoor scene for new series "CIB Investigation Files." In the scene, Maggie was riding in Wong He's car, however when she saw Wong's mother on the street, Maggie quickly got off the car and called out to her. Although Maggie was a spokesperson for Marianne Chan Miu Ying's slimming products earlier, Maggie did not show off her good figure in the scene. However Maggie did wear a low-cut top, but due to the restrictions of family TV, her outfit was covered by an outer blazer.

The reporters noticed that Maggie was in a very good mood, chatting with her colleagues. Since the director had to film the scene from many different angles, Maggie had to run up and down the street many times, despite wearing high heels that night.

Maggie did not have any complaints and met the shooting needs. Although it was fast approaching midnight, many pedestrians stopped by to watch the filming. Also there were a group of foreigners from a nearby bar who found the shooting amusing. While drinking beer, they watched as Maggie ran up and down the street multiple times.

After the scene wrapped up, Maggie posed for some photos at the reporters' request. She smiled and asked why the reporters were still working although the time was approaching midnight. Despite the cold weather, the reporters received Maggie's concern and warmth!

Maggie Shiu's Late-Nite Filming Lured Complaints

Yesterday (25 Feb 2006) at Causeway Bay, Maggie Shiu and Wong Hei were filming for their new serial 《CIB刑事情報科》 Because of the loudness of the filming activities at late night hours (around 1 am), they received lots of complaints from the residents in that area. Police was dispatched to the area to investigate the complaints. After the film crew lowered their loudness that the filming was allowed to continue.

In shooting break, Maggie accepted interview with reporters and revealed that she and other crew had to filming until 6am. Although she had to continue work the next day, she was not too exhausted, since she would try to rest on the set whenever possible. Feb 27 iss Maggie’s birthday. When asked if she would celebrate it with friends, she said that it was a private matter and would not talk about it. However, she said that she would be spending her birthday at work.
