Brief Summary:
Please scroll down if you have not seen the series and do not want to be spoiled.

Ding Wing Cheng (Felix Wong) and Miu Fan Fong (Yammie Lam) are married and have a son, Kin. Fong is also pregnant. They were very poor. During Chinese New Year, Cheng gambled all of their Chinese New Year's money away. Fong goes out and steals somebody's purse. She was caught and charged for a murder that she did not commit. She gave birth to Hong and was eventually hanged.

Ding Wing Cheng goes crazy and kills himself. Their kids, Kin and Hong, were raised by Cheng's boss and his wife, Wun Yi. Wun Yi's husband dies not too long after Kin and Hong moves in. This leaves Wun Yi to take care of four orphans. They were already looking after two kids before Kin and Hong moved in.

Some years later, the kids are all grown up. Kin (Felix Wong) works two jobs to pay for his brother, Hong's (Deric Wan) education. Kin and Kwun (Carina Lau) meets because they were doing a T.V. special that explores the lives of 3 persons born at exactly the same time and day. Kin and Kwun soon became good friends.

Lee Wah (Kathy Chow) moves in to live with Wun Yi and the gang after they moved into a bigger apartment. Her father wanted Wah to live with them while she's attending university in Hong Kong. Wah has a crush on Hong, who uses her to do his chores. Wah and Kin will then end up working at the same place and Kin develops a crush for Wah.

Kwun does not get along with her father. Her father thinks she is useless and he only looks out for his son, Kit. Kwun moves out and finds a job with the help of Kin.

Hong meets Ka Mun (Maggie Siu) after she and her boyfriend saved Hong in a car accident where he injured his leg. Kin was driving and telling Hong not to use Wah to do his work. After the accident, Hong and Kin's relationship deteriorated. Hong tries to persue Ka Mun which drove Ka Mun's insecure boyfriend crazy. Ka Mun and Hong then end up together.

Wah eventually moves out because she was hurt by Hong and felt uneasy around Kin ever since she found out that he liked her. When Kin was away at the police academy, Wah found out that Kin slept out all night in the rain to buy a music box for her. She felt really touched and she started to like Kin. Wah and Kin ends up together. At this point, Kwun also developed feelings for Kin, but did not tell Kin. Only Kwun's co-worker knows of her feelings for Kin.

Hong and his boss (who is the son of the lawyer Fong Sai Bong, who wrongly accused their mother of murder) accidentally kills Kwun's brother, Kit. Hong begs Kin to admit the crime instead because he didn't want to go to jail. Kin does admit to the killing and goes to jail for something he didn't do.

Hong gets promoted at the law firm and makes a lot of money. He moves out because he does not get along with Wun Yi. He meets the daughter of Fong Sai Bong and courts her. Ka Mun finds out that she is pregnant and pressures Hong to get married. Hong refuses because he wants to be with Fong Sai Bong's daughter, Fong Mei Yan. Hong and Ka Mun goes to Malaysia to see Ka Mun's parents. There, Hong kills Ka Mun by pushing her off a moving train. Hong and Mei Yan gets married.

Kin gets out of jail and starts a restaurant business with his buddies from prison. He and Wah decides to get married. Kin stumbled on a letter Wah wrote which says she wasn't sure about the relationship with Kin. On the wedding day, Kin does not show up. Wah and Kin break up and Wah moves to Malaysia. Kin discovers from Kwun's colleague that Kwun was in love with him and Kwun and Kin gets together.

Wun Yi goes to Malaysai to visit Nan Yi (Ka Mun's mother who was Wun Yi's ex-boss). At that time, Hong was there for a business trip. Wun Yi comes across a suicide letter written by Ka Mun and went to ask Hong the truth about Ka Mun's disappearance. Hong kills Wun Yi after they get into a fight regarding the suicide note.

Kin goes to Malaysia to look for Wun Yi after he discovered that she was missing. In Malaysia, he ask Wah to help him find Wun Yi. Kin discovers Wun Yi's body and found out that Hong killed her.

In Hong Kong, Hong goes to court regarding the murder of Wun Yi. He was not charged with the crime because of some law that says that evidence that were written in English cannot be used if the witnesses do not understand English. Hong also promised he'll never go to Malaysia, so he is safe as long as he's not in Malaysia. Mei Yan finds out that she is pregnant but decides to leave Hong for killing Wun Yi. Hong ends up leaving the law firm, so he constantly extorts money from Mei Yan. After giving birth to their son, Mei Yan kills herself. Hong kidnaps his son and demands money from Fong Sai Bong. He is then caught and placed in jail.

Meanwhile, Kin's business is really successful. Wah returns to Hong Kong to visit her parents and plans to return to Malaysia with her parents. On her way home, her plane crashed and she was the only survivor. She became crippled due to the crash and Kin was taking care of her. She tried to get Kin back but it was too late because Kin and Kwun were going to get married. On their wedding day, Wah commits suicide.

Several years has passed and Kin and Kwun had a son. Kin now works in Kwun's father's business. Kin sees Hong in the streets and feels bad so he hired Hong to work in one of his restaurants. Hong poisons Kin's family, killing 6 people and their son.

Kin finds out that Hong poisoned the family after he found out that Hong would inherit his fortune if his family dies. He also found a device in his phone. Kin decides to get revenge on Hong. He promotes Hong and told him to do a business errand in Australia (?not sure). During the plane ride, however, Hong ended up landing in Malaysia where he was caught. He was then sentenced to jail for the death of Wun Yi.

Kwun was really mad at Kin for letting Hong near the family and leaves him to do work in Africa. She promises to return to the church where they got married in 10 years on their birthday. Ten years later, a woman walks up to Kin and leaves a note saying that "Kwun has died and he should forget her".

My Review:
I watched this movie when I was really young and remembered loving it. I just recently rewatched this series again and I liked it even more now. This movie is definitely a movie for the ages.

This movie is a masterpiece and arguably the best modern series of all time. I can only name a couple of series off the top of my head that is able to move me the way this series did. This movie had no boring parts and everything flowed at a nice pace.

The acting by everyone was superb, especially Felix and Deric. Felix, as usual, gave an unforgettable performance playing both father and son. He was so convincing in both roles playing the gambling crazed father and a kind and unselfish brother.

Deric Wan also gave a great performance. He was so good at portraying the greedy and selfish brother that I wanted to throw something at the T.V. in hopes of hitting him.

Of the female actors, I have to give my props to Kathy Chow. She was brilliant in playing the shy and clumsy cousin at the beginning to the jealous cousin at the end.

Carina Lau played her character well. I thought that she had great chemistry with Felix and her character was likable throughout the movie.

I love Maggie Siu in this serial. I thought she was so pretty in this movie and she did a great job as Ka Mun. My only complaint about her character is that her character became so weak after she was with Hong.

All the songs for this serial were excellent. The main theme by Danny Chan was very moving was very appropriate. The subthemes by Wong Kit were also wonderful.

 KMD's Rating: (Scale of 5)

YesAsia Review :

In Looking Back In Anger, everyone still remember the most memorable scene where wicked Hong (Wan Siu-Lun) pushes his girlfriend (Maggie Siu) out from the train. Want to recapture the unforgettable storyline plus the excellent performance with various heavyweights, such as Wong Yat-wah, Kathy Chow, Carina Lau, Yammie Lam and Sheung Tin-Ngo? Grasp the 80's classic Cantonese dramas Looking Back In Anger!

The mother of Hong and Kin (Felix Wong) were accused of murder and sentenced to capital punishment. Out of compassion, Wan (So Hang Suen) brought up the two brothers, but disappointed to see Hong turning evil...

Reviwer: Anonymous --- A rare Gem

Although not listed in YesAsia top 100 TV series, Looking Back In Anger is most definitely my Top 10. It has a crew of very strong casts and excellent narrative. Definitely the most successful series in TVB history. It has been rated one of the most watched TVB series globally. Looking Back in Anger is a rare Gem. Felix Wong and Carina Lau on screen presence really light up the story. But the most memorable of all its casts has to be Deric Wan's portrayal as Felix's brother whose very humanity leads him to finally destroyed everything he ever owed. This eerily echoes the theme song by Danny Chan, "Mut Liu To, Ngo So Sat Tik, King Si Ngo Tik So Yau", in translation, All that I'd ever lost is all I'd ever had". A gripping wisdom to appreciate what we had and accept what we don't. The most important of all is to stay true to oneself. Perhaps, Deric's greatest lost is his kinship with Felix and his foster mother and sister. But most memorable of all is his willingness to sacrifice his true love for Maggie Siu for ambition and wealth. Maggie's budding talent will later lead her to be recognize as TVB best actress in her subsequent roles. Perhaps the most successful of all would be the resurrection of Deric and Maggie's on screen chemistry in BLOOD OF GOOD AND EVIL of which has successfully launch the career of both actors. To be honest, I personally have preference for Blood of Good and Evil as it offers a more realistic portrayal of humanity and perhaps a better narrative. It is perhaps not fair of me to make comparison between this critically acclaimed TVB series. I am therefore grateful for the release of Looking Back In Anger on VCDs. However, I am eagerly waiting for the release of Blood of Good and Evil and I am sure many would agree with me. Blood of Good and Evil came fourth as the most watched TVB series of all time. Fingers cross.

Reviewer: Cheng Suang Heng  --- The Classics of 1980s

Buy it! Ask anyone who have watched it in the 1980s and they will tell you it is VERY good. I am buying it just to keep. 8) What is so good about it? There are 3 reasons: (1) It is one of the best cast you will have in the 1980s, including Huang Ri Hua, Lan Jie Ying, Carina, Wen Zhao Lun, etc. In fact, Wen Zhao Lun really became FAMOUS because of this show! (2) The theme song is VERY meaningful and good too. It was sung by Chen Bai Qiang, who was among the Canto songs king in the 1980s. The song was also translated into other languages. (3) MOST IMPORTANT, the story is very good, with lots of unexpected events. It is about the life of 3 people who are born on the same day but had very different lifes. It depicted how the life of people can change with misunderstandings and wrong sentence. Despite the trials and tribulations in life, the character played by Huang Ri Hua remained very nice. At the end of the show, one would ask the question - was what he did worthwhile? Of course, nearly all fans of the show was eager to know the ending then ... which I am not going to say, so as not to have spoilers. Just ask those who watch TVB in the 80s and they will DEFINITELY recommend the show.

My friend just told me that in fact, this drama garnered the highest rating in TVB history (and received the honour at a TVB anniversary), until the record was broken recently by another (which he can't remember).

I like Maggie's character in this, particularly at the begining. I thought she was sooo pretty and sweet (I always like Maggie's portrayal of sweet personalities). Later on, her character did become too weak and co-dependent.
I understand why this was such a highly rated serial. It was so star-studded, the acting was great, the script was good. Though, the story(s) was way too sad, not an easy show to watch.
