MAGGIE SHIU: WITHOUT EXPERIENCING SADNESS AND PAIN, HOW CAN ONE KNOW TRUE HAPPINESS?
During the promotional event for TVB drama “Gem of Life” held in Hangzhou, leading actress Maggie Shiu appeared slightly nervous perhaps due to her limited fluency in spoken mandarin as she gestured animatedly while struggling to express herself as best as she could. Yesterday afternoon, both the actress and her co-star Kenny Wong who emerged as winners in a recent online [1]voting contest for most popular Gem of Life characters, participated in the Gem of Life function organized by WASU Hang Zhou Digital TV Pte Ltd. As the organizer had specially requested the media not to probe into the personal “love life” of the two stars, most of the interviews centered on the career of the artistes.
Since more than a decade, Maggie Shiu has been a familiar face to audience in China, with her roles in popular TVB dramas such as “Looking Back in Anger”, “Blood of Good and Evil” and “The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre 1986”. However, these dramas she starred in were TVB’s epic productions dating back more than 10 years ago and even earlier. Looking back at her roles in numerous dramas, it seems that she mostly portrayed characters going through painful ordeals in love and relationships. Even the character Sylvia Hong in Gem of Life, the eldest of the Hong sisters, has a painful love story to tell.
Regarding this, Maggie Shiu commented in a helpless tone: “When I saw the script, I felt and said to myself, Sigh, such a bitter role again. Yet, this is after all my job and while portraying such bitter and painful roles does affect my state of mind, I am getting better and faster in withdrawing myself from the emotions of the characters, after so many years of acting. Now I will tell myself, whenever I have my makeup on, it is working time and when I am without make-up, I am off work and I will quickly meet up with friends, exercise and enjoy a meal.”
Being TVB’s “veteran”, Maggie Shiu had co-starred with uncountable number of the hottest leading actors in TVB such as Tony Leung in the 80s and Deric Wan in the 90s. However, on the topic of whom she likes most as her co-star, Maggie Shiu remains impartial and expressed: “Each of the actors I co-starred with is a good guy. Up till now I still keep in touch with them so I cannot say anything negative about them.”
Lastly, Maggie Shiu revealed that she hoped to be able to take on a happier and more light-hearted role in her next project. While everyone was basking in a celebratory mood, the actress asked a rhetorical question in a somber note, “Without experiencing sadness and pain, how can one know true happiness?”
[1] [As part of the efforts to promote the drama in Hang Zhou, WASU HZDTV.COM held a contest online for GOL fans to vote for their favorite character in the drama and get a chance to meet the characters in person. The male and female artistes portraying the characters with the highest votes would meet the fans on 11 June 2009. |
