ZAOBAO READER PK (“CHALLENGES”) MAGGIE SHIU ON THE SPOT
Original article in chinese: http://jrzb.zjol.com.cn/html/2009-06/12/content_4880578.htm
Yesterday, the WASU Hangzhou Digital TV Pte Ltd organized the Gem of Life “Meet the Fans” session with guest appearances by the leading stars portraying the infamous couple in a sham marriage in the drama;Maggie Shiu (eldest sister, Sylvia Hong) and Kenny Wong (Sunny). In addition, Zaobao also conducted an e-online event to draw readers to participate in related online activities. Five readers who were active participants were lucky enough to be selected to meet the stars face-to-face.
Despite their limited fluency in spoken mandarin, these two Hong Kong entertainers; one charismatic veteran actress and a hot hunk exudes irresistable charm which is definitely not to be underestimated. This is evident in the extent of how the fans enjoyed the session with the stars, whether it is a 12 year-old child or 40 year-old mother.
Despite attempts by the organiser to thwart the media from prying into the personal love lives of the two artistes, the reporters still managed to probe further through questions with underlying reference. Although Maggie Shiu is poised, she was unreserved in expressing herself in the aspect of maternal love.
Interrogation Session 1
Question: Nowadays, it is common for Hong Kong stars to be showy, aren’t you keeping too low a profile?
[Underlying meaning: Decline in popularity]
Maggie Shiu: (calm expression) Low profile is just simply being low profile, while work is just work. It’s a good thing that my fans like me being low profile, as this is probably my personality. (Will you share on your latest happenings with fans by writing a blog?) No, I am still at the stage of letter writing and I seldom use the computer to read online gossips and happenings. A computer is like a TV, I don’t like it. I like the feeling of completing a personal letter and putting it into the envelope as it is very real. (What will you write?). Ha-ha, this is a secret between me and my fans, I won’t tell you.
Scene 1: The Shy and Reserved Star
At the event, every single female fan present wanted to rush up the stage to hug Maggie Shiu (including me who is translating this!!!). But reporters noticed that Maggie rejected several times with a polite smile, revealing her extremely shy disposition. One of the audience who was the first to complete the Gem of Life series on WASU HZDTV online started conversing with Maggie in fluent Cantonese but the latter was seemingly not as excited as the fan and was spotted languidly playing with a tomato in a bowl and asking why the tomato here seems bigger than those in Hong Kong. At this moment, the female fan suddenly grabbed hold of Maggie’s waist and startled her. Maggie exclaimed, “Sorry, I am so shy…”
(Magifaye: She must be feeling awkward, I tend to doodle and play with my fingers too and of cos will be startled when someone suddenly hugs me without warning!)
Interrogation Session 2
Question: (Gem of Life) is a female centric drama and is also a story about a mother. How do you view the role of a mother?
[Underlying/Hidden meaning: About marriage and childbirth]
Maggie Shiu: I feel that a mother has to face a great deal of pressure. In the drama, whatever mother does is for our own good. But maternal love is hard to express and the child may not understand fully at one time. So, sometimes it is manifested in tantrums or by confiding in others, one cannot be too insistent or rigid.
Scene 2: Public Display of Maternal Instinct
When facing the audience who has grown up watching her dramas, Maggie Shiu is still very shy. However, the moment she sees a child fan, her eyes brightened. The 12 year old fan had the same cropped bob as her and Maggie Shiu repeatedly exclaimed at “how cute” the girl is and even wanted to hug the girl. Unfortunately, Maggie’s affections were unrequited as the little girl sneaked off the stage to the side of her mother. At this moment, Maggie Shiu did the exceptional and went down the stage to seek permission from the girl’s mother before giving her little friend a hug, unable to conceal her maternal instinct anymore.
Interrogation Session 3
Question: While onscreen, you pair with Kenny Wong as a bogus couple. Off-screen, what is your relationship with him?
[Underlying question: Alleged off-screen romance with Kenny Wong]
(Maggie Shiu silently threw a glance at him and Kenny Wong immediately took over the “arrow”)
Kenny Wong: In the drama, we shared a sisterly bond. No romantic love.
Maggie Shiu: (laughed shyly): Yes, I can’t even feel his love for me!
Scene 3: Role Playing with Fans
One Zaobao reader “Slow Train” was swift enough to grasp the opportunity to come on stage and role played a scene from Gem of Life with Maggie Shiu in Hangzhou language. As soon as leaves the stage, she excitedly told the reporters: “I heard them whispering non-stop, I heard Kenny told Maggie in Cantonese that I acted better than her. I am exhilarated but I really find them quite compatible!” |
