Hong Kong director Johnnie To is in talks to remake the 1970 French crime thriller The Red Circle and to work with the original film's star on another project, To's assistant said Thursday. To is discussing The Red Circle project with Paris-based movie company StudioCanal, but the two sides have not decided on a script or cast, To's assistant Ding Yuin-shan said. Ding said the movie will likely be shot in English but that the choice of language will depend on the script. French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville's The Red Circle is about the relationship between a recently freed convict, a woman and a former police officer. Separately, To is also in talks about an unrelated project with actor Alain Delon, who played the ex-convict in the original version of The Red Circle. Ding said To and Delon met last year and agreed to work together, but the two have not settled on a specific project. "We don't have a story or concept at this stage," Ding said. Laurence Seknazi, Delon's secretary, confirmed earlier this month that the French actor will shoot a movie by To in October but said he had no further information. To's credits include gangster movies Election and Election 2.
