TOWARD A BRAND NEW WORLD – MAGGIE SHIU (Next Magazine 894; 26 April 2007)
(Next Magazine 894; 26 April 2007) Prologue To heal broken heart, not everybody needs to cry and howl in Shangrila. Maggie Shiu, simply by having interview in New World, Wan Chai to promote her new movie, is a more sincere example. People often think of Maggie as a wounded lady after her separation from Ekin Cheng. Even many movie makers cast her for such roles. But she still stay in this business. Maggie said, “ ‘Acting’ is my refuge shelter. The real world is much more complex.” Talk about ‘love’, she jeered and laughed. Sometimes such courage is more piteous than weeping. A brand new world (《 Brave New World 》, Aldous Huxley 1932) needs courage. Modest During photo session, the photographers checked the lights to prevent showing dark circles around Maggie’s eyes. Suddenly she said, “Show it. The darker, the better.” Very confident. (N = Next magazine; S = Shiu Maggie) N : You don’t like being taken pictures, do you? S : I don’t know which posing and expression to use. Taking pictures, now have two contradictory meanings. In the past, having pictures taken by the media, it means a formal photo session with pretty face, posing in front of camera. Nowadays, it means you are caught by paparazzi’s camera in the middle of the night, shocked. I have never been good in front of still cameras. In recent years, I feel more uncomfortable for that. N : You don’t like interviews either, do you?
N : You don’t like interviews either, do you? S : You are expected to talk about your personal feelings, your hearts, in (media) interviews. But I only share my personal feelings with with close friends. I think it is improper to share them with journalist. It will become meaningless. Better talk about career and works. It is more realistic. Interview for new movies is more novel, more sincere. Decisive Maggie Shiu entered the entertainment business in 1984. Her first (official) role was the pretty Siu Ciu (Xiao Zhao) in “The New Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre”. Broken up with Ekin Cheng after a 7 years relationship, Maggie seems to age. Four years ago, before reaching the age of 40, Maggie took the role as the mother of Sonija Kwok (11 years younger than Maggie) and, later, Ron Ng. N : Don’t you feel depressed (being offered such role)? S : If I can act such character, it means I am a good actor. If not, it means I am not good. I concentrated on doing the job professionally, not bothered by other things. At that time I paid attention to Sonija’s mom when she visited her daughter to the filming location. I took notes on how the mother and daughter interact. As professional actor, sooner or later I have to accept such role. In my case, it arrived earlier. Sometimes, I think being a young mother is better than growing old lonely. N : Being a spoke person for cosmetic products, does aging means negative to you? S : When you find out I still look pretty for my age, it means my cosmetic products are effective. They sell well. N : Are you more decisive than the younger actors? S : Every generations are different. The younger generation use new jargons and slang I don’t catch. There is no way to compare. Unknot
Unknot Beside the motherly roles, Maggie is often offered grey/dark roles. Rumor said it is because she looks wounded after the break up. S : You remind me to express happy feelings more often in the future, so that I will get offers for comedy roles, and earn more. Ha…ha… I live happily, but people only think of me for sad characters. To look at it from another angle, it is an opportunity to me. I think my acting skill is better when I was younger. At that time I have little experience, thus my expression and reaction is more spontaneous. As one gets older, you have to care for much more things, thus your reactions is less spontaneous. But I prefer now. It is more realistic. Help me promoting my new movie: “Gong Tau” – An Oriental Black Magic. N : Since you mention about “gong tau” (curse), do you think having the image of broken hearted Maggie is similar to being cursed? S : I agree. But love cursed is able to be unknotted, no matter how hard it is. N : When people think of how Maggie Shiu coming out of the blue, they have the image of the tough ladies in Johnnie To’s movies or the dark characters in horror movies. S : Life is not that simple. I wish to be tough, but there are occasions I feel weak. Feeling blue is normal. Coming out of it needs courage. Refuge Shelter
Refuge Shelter Maggie Shiu is very slim. She has almost no meat on her limbs. During the lunch time in this interview, her assistant asked, “Maggie, do you want veggie?” Veggie, not rice. Two years ago, Maggie had a series of shocking sexy photo ads. S : I, myself, was shocked too. I shied away from this kind of job offers when I was younger. Thus some people think now I must have problems (for doing the ads). Suddenly everybody is psychologist. N : Do you care of that reaction? S : I am not desperate. I take it as people care for me. I appreciate it. They can think of all reasons they want to. I was just doing my job for living. N : Are you investing in beauty business now? S : I am a small investor. Observing how hard my business partner works, I realize acting fits me better. The business world is too complex. Many things are unpredictable. In movies, actors know the script ahead of time. In real world, a person can treat you good in one occasion, but suddenly treats you cold the next hour. I have experienced it. I do not know what reaction I should have. I still prefer acting. Investing in the beauty business is for being pretty; researching how to looks pretty. N : Rumor said, in the past Maggie Shiu wore no make-up in public. S : I still do that now. N : Are you still confident on your looks? S : Now I put make-up more often out of politeness. About being confident, I don’t want not able to recognize myself when the dark circles are removed from around my eyes. Epilog Maggie Shiu was serious for this interview. After it ended, she asked for my name card and said, “I have three interviews today. The topics should be almost the same. Boring. You are lucky being the first.” Some entertainers get more skillful after each interview. Maggie Shiu is not among them.
